Sheltered Housing Scheme
Bessbrook, Co Armagh

This original listed building had fallen into disrepair to the point of dereliction and this regeneration project on the edge of the border town of Bessbrook, Co Down provides new sheltered housing accommodation for South Ulster Housing Association. The adjoining gate lodge was also carefully restored within the Main Contract.

Careful consideration was given to a sympathetic solution in terms of detailing and spatial arrangement. Extensive negotiations with the Northern Ireland Planning Service and Historic Buildings Branch of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency were undertaken to achieve a suitable design outcome.

A substantial extension was added to create a development of 20 residential units, whilst protecting the integrity of the original house and its environs. The scheme has successfully regenerated these existing buildings and provided a high quality environment for both the residents and the town of Bessbrook.

HPA as lead consultant headed the design team and as well as providing our normal architectural services, assisted with the brief compilation; provided energy and environmental advice; financial / feasibility advice; project management services and contract administration; public consultation and contract valuations. Services of Quantity Surveyor, Services Consultant, Structural Engineer and Planning Supervisor were sub-contracted to companies whom we work with on a regular basis
