The Chiltern School, Extension Dunstable, Bedfordshire
HPA were appointed by London based contractor Reds10 on a Design & Build basis to
undertake full building design, coordinate Planning & Building Control submissions and
support works on site for this school extension in Bedfordshire.
Providing personalised learning opportunities for pupils with a range of special educational
needs & disabilities, The Chiltern School currently operates on a heavily developed 0.7 hectare
site, Southeast of Dunstable town centre.
To meet the increased demand for child places, HPA worked closely with the school to achieve
an optimal design solution, comprising of 6 new modular classrooms units and associated
specialist support spaces. Using the existing sites topography, HPA where able to create fully
DDA compliant teaching accommodation, which had a minimal impact on the existing external
secure playground spaces.
The use of off-site modular construction for the extension building meant that ongoing
operation of the existing school was largely unaffected.
HPA’s final design also improved vehicular access to & parking provision within the restricted
site, thus limiting potential for traffic congestion on the surrounding road network.
